THE FIRST CRUSADE
Unno Domini nostri Jesu Christi,1096

Pope Urban II, on tour in France, gave a speech at the council of Clermont, urging the knights and lords of Western Europe to embark on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Jerusalem. The goal was to capture the city for Christendom, protect Christian pilgrims, reassert the unique authority of the catholic church, and aid the eastern Roman Emperor in his wars against the Turks. This inexplicable spasm of theological warfare came to be understood as the first in a long line of holy wars known as the Crusades.
The questions of what possible motivations could have provoked such a seemingly absurd expedition, let alone what inspired its success have troubled scholars for centuries and been framed in radically different ways by historians. Some see it as the reassertion of Western civilization after the Dark Ages. Others see it as a senseless massacre perpetrated by barbarians and conceived by zealots. Some highlight the romance and chivalry inevitably encountered in depictions of the period while others insist on more materialistic ideals. Any discussion of the motivations of the first Crusade would be incomplete without the voices of the Crusaders themselves who, in the autumn of the year 1095, responded to Pope Urban's call by taking up the chant "Deus lo Vult" — God wills it.

ASOIAF: ROBERT'S COUNCIL
(A GAME OF THRONES)
Politics, intrigue, murder.

No, this committee is not about US politics, it's about Game of Thrones! Or rather, about George R.R. Martin's famous book series A Song of Ice and Fire, and its related television series. In the continent of Westeros, rumours have spread across the continent of a dragon prince who will ride to the Seven Kingdoms and claim the crown of the Iron Throne, usurping the king and becoming the new King of Westeros! Lords and ladies from across the realm have been summoned by the once-mighty King Robert I Baratheon to discuss this threat and determine how to prevent such an invasion, and although all have sworn fealty to King Robert, not all are eternally loyal. At night, many in Westeros pray for the return of the dragon-riding House Targaryen and drink secret toasts to the dragon princes' safe return to Westeros. Will delegates successfully save the Seven Kingdoms from its dragon invaders who seek to reconquer their lost throne, or will they secretly plan the Targaryens return to power and steadily prepare for the downfall of King Robert and his loyalists? Only time will tell...
